"In their circus film
The Wrestler and the Clown
, the Russians have wrought a stunning color canvas. From beginning to end, the color itself—splashed forth by the Soviet photographer and art director—brilliantly nails this backstage drama of the big top. A huge cast, costumed to the teeth, throngs this lavish picture, biographically based on the friendship and intertwining careers of two famous Russian circus artists at the turn of the century. An open-faced giant named S. Cheken (as Ivan Puddobny, the Wrestler) and a wistful-looking chap named A. Mikhailov (as Anatoli Durov of the famed Russian clown clan) seem perfectly cast in the title roles. And the two directors, K. Yudin and
Boris Barnet
, share a fine atmosphere eye for crowd scenes, whether in a smoky restaurant or under the big top itself, where the picture comes to life."
