meant for Monroe, but still worthwhile

This film, based on William Inge's A Loss of Roses, was one of several film projects left on the back shelf by Marilyn Monroe's death. No one but she could have uplifted this rather morose tale of a failed showgirl's dreams of a secure home life. Woodward then, is essentially miscast. Yet it is her strong persona (though different from the play's heroine) that compels you to watch and care about her fate. Backed by a good cast and a fine Jerry Goldsmith score, the film is worth seeing.
