The creme de la creme of actors, performing in roles that offer their best. Tognazzi, Gassman, and Mastroianni, I know these guys' talents so well by now (thank you Movie Detective) that I take their excellence for granted, so the real satisfaction here was my stumbling upon the unexpected performances. Carla Gravina, a marvelous, subtle actor, first rank. Milena Vukotic, exquisite as Trintignant's stoic, loving wife, during his spectacular crumble under the weight of expectation. And Serge Reggiani, so unassumingly great in his good humored fade into nothingness.
