This black and white widescreen gem is very nicely transferred, and is highly involving. The characters seem very human, and the battle scenes have a striking reality.

I'm not well versed in Soviet movies of the Cold War era, and despite the (to me) implausible heroic development of Bykov's character, and some gaps in continuity, this is a good showcase for the high qualities of the Russian actors and Yevgeni Karelov, the director. If I were to recommend a section of the movie, it would be in the first half when Bykov and Yankovsky, on a reconnaissance mission, drop from the proverbial frying pan into the fire, and then a quick return to the frying pan.
