In Japanese with English subtitles. The original title of this film is Anjô-ke no Butôkai.

After Japan's loss in the war, the wealthy, cultured, liberal Anjo family have to give up their mansion and their way of life. They hold one last ball at the house before leaving. The seemingly cold, cynical son secretly grieves for his defeated father and the values that the war destroyed, while the daughter tries to prevent father from taking his life and to find her own place in the new Japan. This movie was one of the ten favorite films of distinguished author and Japanese cinema fan Susan Sontag.

4 of 5 THE BALL AT THE ANJO HOUSE September 22, 2015
Reviewer: Kenneth Orme from Ligonier, PA United States
Kozaburo Yoshimura's 1947 film THE BALL AT THE ANJO HOUSE features outstanding acting, superlative costumes and sets, exceptionally fine lighting and an intelligent, uncompromising screenplay created by Kaneto Shindo. Its storyline of an aristocratic Japanese family shorn of its money and titles by American occupation and its consequent property tax has a universal resonance to it, suggestive of THE CHERRY ORCHARD by Chekhov. At times overly talky, its ambiguous ending and finely shaded performances more than compensate for rather dull opening scenes.
