This is a region-free DVD-R without case or artwork.

In French with English subtitles.

Widescreen. This film by French director Alain Resnais (Last Year in Marienbad) is loosely based on a true story from the 1930s about financier, con-man and swindler Stavisky (Jean-Paul Belmondo), who was arrested in 1934 for selling phony stock but was never brought to trial. While in jail, he continued to engage in dubious monetary transactions. As the rumors that he was being protected by high-ranking members of the government of the French Third Republic were undoubtedly true, the scandal had a profoundly unsettling effect on the French nation, already suffering from poor government handling of the Depression, and this incident nearly brought down both the government and the Republic. Stavisky's death in prison (an apparent suicide) triggered widespread unrest and rioting. In the film, we see his rise to wealth, years spent living a life of luxury, and his ultimate downfall. Also stars Charles Boyer as the nobleman Raoul.

Resnais is one of my favorite directors but I've been wanting to get a hold of this because of Belmondo and Sondheim's score. Fair to say the movie is a masterpiece.

5 of 5 Resnais masterwork December 26, 2014

Elegant, sumptuous elegy for a high style of 30's living.  The structure - with flash forwards coming late in the film - is a bit clumsy, and the politics and financial chicanery a bit difficult to follow.  But it doesn't matter.
See it for the ravishingly beautiful cinematography by Sacha Vierny, perfect score by Stephen Sondheim, and wonderful performances by all - especially Boyer, Belmondo and Duperrey.
