In French with English subtitles. Widescreen.

Some of the best directors in France, Jean-Luc Godard, Claude Chabrol, Jacques Demy, and Philippe de Broca among them, each took one of seven different sketches (at approximately fifteen minutes each) to illustrate the seven cardinal sins in this interesting compilation film with an accent on comedy. Among the set of seven sins are "Lust" in which two young men at a sidewalk cafe indulge in discussing the topic, and "Avarice" in which a student wins some time with a hooker but not before some intense competition. "Gluttony" is about a family all set to go to a funeral when hunger pangs strike. Most of the skits are sharp, to the point, and witty. Familiar European stars also take their turns at heading up the cast, including Marina Vlady, Jean-Louis Trintignant, and Eddie Constantine.

4 of 5 Memory serves me better June 15, 2018
Reviewer: tom desimone from Palm Springs, CA United States
I always look for old films which I recall seeing as a youngster, particularly the foreign ones that are never available here. Sometimes It's a real treat seeing them again and keeping them in my library!  On occasion I get one that surprises me when it doesn't live up to expectations.  This film, THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS, is one of those.  I seem to recall it being far more interesting and more dramatic than it appears now.  I felt that there was too much broad comedy than I remembered. It was still good to see an old favorite but perhaps being younger at the time, my memory was better than the film.  The stories are mostly "cute" and play like short skits rather than well thought out plays.  Performances are good but the pace is a bit slow now.  It's not a bad film, just not a GREAT one.

4 of 5 Excellent April 22, 2018

Fair transfer of an often excellent collection of short movies by (then) young French directors (mostly). The opening, "Wrath," by Ianesco, is well worth the price by itself.

VHS transfer, so quality is somewhat washed out. Good transfer overall.  Sound is fine.
