For those of us who find Anna Magnani one of Italy's greatest imports, this outrageous evening-long party is wonderful fun; her listed co-star is the legendary Toto, but it is Ben Gazzara who surprises--who knew he was Sicilian? Who expects him to sulk Cassavetes-style in dark corners and mutter off-script? This viewer did, and was pleasantly surprised to see him play off of Magnani with great puckish spirit as the pair of them set off on a riotious night of La Dolce Vita. For those in the mood for a sort of improvised Fellini-esque party, Risate de Gioia is a delight.

'Risate' di Mario Monicelli, is such a wonderful film that takes you from joy and laughter, to a tear now and then, and back to the pleasure of watching Italian cinema. Magnani's performance is, as you would think, absolutely marvelous. You know her dramatic performances, but if you haven't seen her in a comedy you MUST watch this film!
