This film was produced by the Defa company, situated in the Eastern section of Berlin, occupied by the Soviets. However, at its beginnings of making films, the German film makers still had a pretty free hand of how they would present a film. The early films of director Kurt Maetzig were very good. Later on Everything across the board had a red tinge. Not so "Marriage". It deals with quite another menace, that of Hitler's Third Reich. The much loved German actor Joachim Gottschalk had a Jewish wife. If you know anything about history you know what happened next. If you don't, watch this film. It is drama at its best, presented by a cast of real professionals, headed by the excellent Ilse Steppat.
