i first saw the film in 1956 (or 1957)--it made a deep impression on me--not for the story, but for the expressionistic sets--perhaps akin to some of the great movies of the 1920's. you feel as if you're dreaming. memorable!

Montand has a great line at the end.

I bought this to see Montand as Satan, but Michele Morgan is the one who shines. At first, her character is merely a forlorn chanteuse in Montand's frenetic, if rather small potatoes nightclub - his hunting ground for souls. The sets are simple and highly stylized - ala The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, but in color. An interesting key to the story is that Montand respects Morgan enough to act as her guardian, though, unintentionally, his mischief drags her down. It's during this downhill slide that her character transforms into outright saintliness.

Great movie with Michele Morgan and Yves Montands. I like french films but can't understand without English subtitles so I was so glad to find this site that adds the subtitles. Fast delivery. Thank you, will order from you again.
