Description

This is a region-free DVD-R without case or artwork.

In French with English subtitles.

Absent from the screen since 1944's Kismet, the incomparable Marlene Dietrich returned in the French romantic melodrama Martin Roumagnac. La Dietrich is cast opposite Jean Gabin, here playing a small-town contractor with an eye for the ladies. He is entranced by Dietrich, a woman who's "been around" and who intends to remain in circulation even after trapping Gabin in her web. When Gabin figures out he's been had, the results are unexpectedly tragic. Martin Roumagnac was a second-choice project for Dietrich and Gabin, who'd originally been offered the leads in Marcel Carne's "Les Portes de la Nuit" (also available on this site). In America, Martin Roumagnac was released as "The Room Upstairs".

Being a huge  Dietrich fan, she can do no wrong with me. Gabin delivers as well.

5 of 5 First time seeing this movie October 8, 2019
Reviewer: ADAM from Pennsylvania, United States
I have always wanted to seen this film and add it to my Dietrich dvd collection. The picture quality is great, I'm very happy with it. It's a treat to hear Dietrich speak French for the duration of the film.  Interesting note: one of the first actors who appears in this movie, will show up again a few years later in Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much. He is riding with James Stewart and Doris Day on the bus into Morocco. To later be killed in the bazaar, James Stewart smearing off his face paint as he falls to the ground.

5 of 5 Hmmm.... October 30, 2017

The movie itself is no classic, but the two stars more than compensate.  It depresses one to think that Gabin and Dietrich walked away from Carne's LES PORTS DU LA NUIT in order to do this.  Oh well.  Fans should certainly check it out; the quality of sound and picture are first-rate
