An early sound film and made in long takes invariably well sustained by Renoir. The actress playing Madame Bovary is a little homely for the role but overall this is a strong adaptation of an often-filmed novel.

Renoir has reached his stride with this one. Lucky Flaubert! Three excellent movies based on his greatest book. In some scenes Madame Tessier strongly resembles Isabelle Huppert who played the part in Chabrol's version. Good transfer.
