Andrea (Germi, who also directed), is a happily married man, but when his wife goes to the seaside with their ill young son, he meets Rita (Franca Bettoia), a woman from their neighborhood. As they begin an affair, Andrea falls in love with Rita, and even as he neglects his family more and more, Rita becomes desperate for a real place in his life...

"L'Uomo di Paglia" explores its subject - a husband's lapse of fidelity - without glibness or embarrassed humor, but with integrity and understanding of all three characters. It's a morally complex drama, maturely handled. Thanks, MovieDetective, for making it available.
