Description

This is a region-free DVD-R without case or artwork.

In Spanish with English subtitles.

Widescreen. Directed by Carlos Saura. While traveling from Barcelona to recover his mother's remains, Luis (Juan Luis Lopez Vazquez) suffers an incredibly vivid flashback to 1936 Segovia as it was on the eve of the Spanish Civil War. In this Spanish film, everything but Luis repeatedly reverts to its 1936 condition. Again and again, things remind him of his stay there, and each time the film returns him to the '30s.

5 of 5 One of Saura's Best September 30, 2017
Reviewer: Shawn from Washington
It seems my favorites from Saura are those that explore childhood and memory. (like Cria Cuervos)

While the Spanish Right reacted to it violently (prints were stolen, a theater firebombed) it is one of Carlos' most beautiful, melancholic tales - rife with symbolism, covering topics from politics to religion, with the blush of first love a thread that runs throughout.

Nice looking print. Very, VERY happy with the purchase.

4 of 5 From the 1970s, Revisiting the 1930s November 3, 2016
Reviewer: Chris Kuykendall from Austin, TX United States
A man, traveling from Barcelona to Segovia to re-bury his mother’s remains in the family vault, toggles reminiscently between the 1970s present and the 1930s of his youth. José Luis López Vásquez (dual roles, as Luis when older and unchanged in appearance when younger), Pedro Sempson and Encarna Paso (his father and mother), Josefina Díaz (his aunt Pilar when older), Lola Cardona (his aunt Pilar in the 1930s), Lina Canalejas (his cousin Angélica when older), María Clara Fernández de Loaysa (dual roles, as his cousin Angélica in the 1930s and later Angélica’s daughter in the 1970s present), and Fernando Delgado (dual roles, as Angélica’s father Miguel in the 1930s and as her husband Anselmo in the 1970s present). It's a good film, once the viewer gets who's who straight. The movie has a tangential connection to the Spanish Civil War, and is better in my opinion than the few other movies I've seen with the same or a more direct connection to that war.
