Le Passage is not so much a war film as it is a love story and that, too, is a quite different love story. It ranks among the top 5 of my favourite films and when I recently received it from MovieDetective I promptly watched it on two consecutive nights. Especially the ending is a stroke of genius. The acting, the photography, even the soundtrack all blend together as one unforgettable whole. Apart from this being a wonderful film, MovieDetective has it in a newly restored crystal clear print, all 125 minutes of it. The French version by Studio Canal is not nearly as good. This one is courtesy of Gaumont and top notch. If you like Andre Cayatte's films and don't have this one yet, I urge you to get it. And don't let the year - 1960 - turn you off. Not a hint of the [by me] much despised French "New wave". Here is a master of the old school at work. Enjoy.
