Dr. Jean Durand (Claude Dauphin), a gifted scientist, has secured funding for his passion project - a machine which will tell people when they will die - from the wealthy but crooked banker Emil Lasser (Erich von Stroheim). Lasser intends to save his dwindling fortune by using Durand's invention as the centerpiece of a life insurance scam. Although Durand is in love with Lasser's daughter (Madeleine Sologne), Durand refuses to coöperate. Still, as Durand's machine becomes more popular with the public, people who know the date of their demise descend into anarchy.
