Léon Labbé (Michel Serrault) owns a hatter's shop in a small provincial town in northern France. To the outside world, he is a respectable tradesman, dutifully caring for his disabled wife. In fact, he has killed his wife and goes through an elaborate charade to give the impression that she is still alive. The town is shaken by the discovery that a serial killer is at work, murdering women apparently without any motive. Only Labbé's neighbor, the quiet tailor Kachoudas (Charles Aznavour), knows the identity of the killer...
