This life-action telling of the story is still more Disney than Collodi, but has its moments.

The Italian television mini-series production of THE ADVENTURES OF PINOCCHIO is graced with two outstanding lead performances, one from Nino Manfredi as Geppeto, the other from Andrea Balestri in the role of the boy Pinocchio. With a teleplay hewing close to the serial original and production design reflecting the endemic poverty of rural Italy, this film interposes neo-realism with dollops of escapist fantasy. Fiorenzo Carpi's music is also commendably evocative. Highly recommended, with outstandingly crisp editing, a fine compression of a 324 minute original.

from beginning to end. I don't know if it's faithful to Collodi's story but it's so tender, sweet and funny that it doesn't matter. It is also a treat to see Gina Lollobrigida and Vittorio de Sica in such a movie. The Pinocchio character is moving: he loves his dad and his fairy, but he insists in doing his own. We all know his kind.
