In French with English subtitles. also known as The 317th Platoon. Widescreen.

Set near the end of the bloody Indo-Chinese War in which the Vietnamese struggled to shuck off the yoke of French colonialism, this taut, provocative French war drama chronicles the movements of the French Army's 317th Platoon, a unit comprised of 41 Laotians and a quartet of French officers that was ordered to make it back to the safety of camp Dien Bien Phu. It is an arduous journey and the soldiers must not only battle constant ambushes, but also the jungle itself.

Fine realistic direction by Pierre Schoendoerffer. Fine realistic performances by Jacques Perrin and Bruno Cremer. A fine, factual, realistic account of a French military unit in Cambodia in1954. For those very reasons it is lacking as dramatic cinematic entertainment. A fine fim.One well worth seeing once.

Bluebeard-An astounding film from Claude Chabrol. Charles Denner's performance is as great as you will ever see on a movie screen. If he did not receive some kind of greatest acting performance award for this role it is the gravest injustice. What a truthful and marvelous film!

The film relates the tragedy of the Viet Nam war before most Americans had even heard of the country.   Raoul Coutard's black-and-white cinematography is first-rate.  Thank you again movie detective.net for obtaining a hidden, neglected, must-see work.
