This copy is excellent - clear, clean, great sound, readable sub-titles. Better than what I expected.

Heinz Ruhmann gives a performance reminiscent of silent comedian Harry Langdon in this adaptation of Gottfried Keller's 19th century novella about a tailoe who wishes he were an Aristocrat, and suddenly seems to be getting his wish through mistaken identity. Some shots resemble Wiemar "Expressionism".

A very entertaining film adaptation from classic German literature. There is great ensemble acting and clever touchs by the director and cinematographer. A lush score accompanies the film. The quality of the print and subtitles is good. I noticed no political messaging.

I'm shying away from all the superfluous comments I could make about Kautner's work. I wish he were better known. This film is a masterpiece and Kautner is simply one of the best directors ever.
