Marcel Carne's first film as director -- one of seven collaborations with screenwriter Jacques Prevert -- was this taut crime story. Francoise Rosay stars as Jenny, who manages a sleazy nightclub owned by the nasty Benoit (Charles Vanel). Jenny runs afoul of Benoit, as well as her own daughter (Lisette Lanvin), when she becomes romantically involved with gangster Lucien (Albert Prejean). Miffed, Benoit and his thuggish hunchbacked assistant (Jean-Louis Barrault) try to break up the lovers while Jenny's daughter competes for Lucien's affections. Carne had previously been an assistant to director Jacques Feyder, so it should come as no surprise that his first solo assignment starred Rosay, Feyder's real-life wife.

3 of 5 carné's first May 7, 2020

well, it was carné's first picture, after all, and prévert's script has plenty of moments, but the cast! françoise rosay is, for me, one of the great screen actresses, and then there's that extraordinary creature margo lion in a typically cryptic role; vanel, toutain, préjean are all good, but barrault as the smiling-sadistic hunchback is a bit much.......

This is the first effort from writer/director team Prevert/Carne, and it's a great start. Jacques Prevert is my favorite screenwriter. The reasons why are all here. Not quite as strong as some of his scripts to follow, but nearly as good. 4.5
