This film and 'Le Dossier Noir' are both astounding Andre Cayatte films and to the same degree Charles Spaak films.Le Dossier Noir grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go.This film is an even better jury room drama than 'Le Glaive et la Balance'.This film and 'Le Dossier Noir' are certainly two of the greatest films ever made.Unlike most directors Cayatte leaves nothing ambiguous. He makes logically clear, letter perfect films with every i dotted,or perhaps it is screenwriter Charles Spaak who should be congratulated. This film does leave one wondering which is the best or the worst way to achieve truth and justice;the American justice system where any attempt to explain anything and get to the truth of the matter is objected to as irrelevant, incompetent, and immaterial or the French system where witnesses, and even the judge apparently, are allowed to say anything they damn well please. As the novelist George Simenon said 'never judge, only try to understand'.Ht
