The opening credits promise much: Piero Tosi, Pasolini, Claudia Cardinale and Marcello Mastroianni; and Mauro Bolognini's handsomely mounted adaptation of Brancati's novel doesn't disappoint. Mastroianni's range was incredible. The film isn't without humor, though not of the light, wry, mischievous kind I remember from the novel. Excellent quality DVD.
