Description

This is a region-free DVD-R without case or artwork.

Julie Harris repeats her stage portrayal of the irrepressible Sally Bowles in John Van Druten's I Am a Camera. Set in pre-Hitler Berlin, the film details the curious, chaste relationship between Sally, an entertainer at a bawdy nightclub, and fledgling writer Christopher Isherwood (Lawrence Harvey). Shelley Winters co-stars as Natalia Landauer, whose impending marriage to a wealthy young Jewish man is imperiled by the anti-Semitism which envelops Berlin as the Nazis gain political power. If all this sounds familiar to you, it is because I Am a Camera is the non-musical precursor to the Broadway musical hit Cabaret. Both properties were based on Christopher Isherwood's Berlin Stories.

I hadn't seen this film since I was a teenager but always remembered it as a favorite. When I saw it being offered I jumped at getting it. Surprisingly (and thankfully) it was just as amusing and fun as I recall (and I'm 85) Julie Harris created a character that will live in Cinema History.

I had this movie on video - am happy to have it on dvd. The picture quality is very good. Picture quality is my biggest concern when first ordering from an online dvd merchant. So I'm very pleased and will order again from MovieDetective.

5 of 5 A whimsy July 23, 2017

Always a delight to see the young Julie Harris in what was her finest role.  Her Sally brims with charm and idiosyncrasy and she's the perfect foil to Harvey's droll Isherwood.  Don't miss this perfect '50's charmer
