A brilliant, cleverly plotted film from the Vichy period by Jacques Becker, who returned to France after 1 year as a POW, and, despite the efforts of the Communist and low life scum who used the war as an excuse to loot the country and shoot Germans in the back in the name of resistance against a Vichy government favored by the majority of the French people, helped give France 5 great cinematic years.

This is an incredible story. It might seem complicated under the direction of anyone else, but Becker handles it with collected authority. It is full of pleasant ironies and clever unexpected doings. Top notch cast to boot. A seriously humorous film directed by a master.
