-------- to put Dostojewsky's novel into the Paris of the 1950s. He might have fallen flat on his face with that, but no, it worked. In fact it worked very well, in no small part due to his actors. Robert Hossein is near perfect as Rene [Raskolnikoff], likewise Marina Vlady as the streetwalker. Interesting to see Bernard Blier as the bad guy for a change. As to the title, "Crime et Chatiment", says it better than "Crime and Punishment". Chatiment, which differs from punishment quite a bit, is more what Dostojewsky had in mind I would think.

Well-acted and compelling modern-day version of this oft-filmed story.
