This clever melodrama from director Renato Castellani stars Anna Magnani as a hard-bitten prostitute whose immorality rubs off on a naive woman (Giulietta Masina) in a women's prison. Taking the innocent Masina under her wing, Magnani corrupts her, but is secretly touched by her kind heart.

Watching this film, it's satisfying to know that classics like these are readily available to viewers who don't live in these countries and have limited access to them.  Magnani fans won't be disappointed as she chews the scenery and dominates the screen as she does in most any film she stars in.  Particularly fascinating is the opportunity to see her and Masina together in the same film.  Two of Italy's premier female actors come together and bring to life characters that are most suited to their personalities as seen before in other films.  Magnani tearing up the screen in her dynamic fashion and taking no prisoners, while Masina lures us in with her gamin soul and innocent take on the victim. Both shine and both win praises. Again, thanks to Movie Detective for making this film, and others like it, available.  Long lost treasures keep appearing on their site and the rewards are appreciated.
