For those who like Powell this obscurity is of course a must. Good picture quality.

This is "required viewing" for all lovers of Michael Powell and Bela Bartok. But for "destination" DVDs like this one, a personal review is almost pointless--since there can hardly be potential customers who're just browsing for something along these lines!

Good opera film, as opposed to filmed opera, is a rarity. The stagecraft for Bartok's symbolist quickie is pure 'sixties, and it works. The performances are restrained and declamatory, just like they should be.
