Mario Ilari, an unemployed, down-on-his-luck man, is accused of murder and arrested for the crime. Only his long-suffering wife (Massina) believes his innocence. Even his attorney (Girotti) initially seems to think Ilari is guilty, as an eyewitness has Ilari at the scene of the crime. As events unfold, however, it becomes clear that Ilari might just be a victim of circumstance.The film features gritty location depictions of 'the wrong side of town' in the neorealist style, and a wonderful performance by Giulietta Masina before she gained greater fame in the films of her future husband, Federico Fellinni.
