A drama about the Carmélites order of nuns is set during the French Revolution. A young woman seeks refuge with the Carmélites because she is terrified of dying during the upheaval. The longer she associates with the nuns the more she is transformed by their faith and devotion, but her new-found faith will be sorely tested. With Jeanne Moreau, Alida Valli. and Pierre Brasseur.

SF Opera recently performed Poulenc's Dialogue of the Carmelites, and in connection with this I came across this 1960 film. I had never heard of it before. It's not the opera, but a drama written by Georges Bernanos; Poulenc adapted his text for his opera. It is well worth watching, and I'm a little surprised that the film is scarce. Kudos to moviedetective for making it available.
